For the health conscious people, they often think of a fattening and not-so-healthy snack when they hear the word ‘cake.’
I can’t blame them for this thinking. After all, many of us have associated cakes with calories, fat, and sugar. I for one consider cake as an occasional treat.
But what if you bake a cake using two superfoods--- blueberry and oats—as its main ingredients?
We all know oats as the main ingredient in breakfast cereals. These are also used in baked goods such as cookies, bread and yes, oat cakes. In the past few years, oats have become known as one of the healthiest foods on the planet.
Packed in fiber, oats are also known for being heart-friendly. One study titled “Oats at 10 Years” which was published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine cited that oats can reduce the risks of coronary heart disease.
Oats are particularly rich in beta-glucan, a specific type of fiber that can lower bad cholesterol levels. A cup of dry oats has 8.2 grams of fiber, which represents 33% of the daily intake requirement for women and about 20% of the daily requirement for men.
It can also lower the risks of colorectal cancer. In 2011, researchers from Britain and the Netherlands published a study which showed this amazing finding—every additional 10 grams of fiber can result to a 10% reduction in colorectal cancer risks.
Eating oats can also do a lot of wonders for people with high blood pressure, according to experts. It can also improve diet quality and digestive health. And oats are foods you would like to eat more of if you are looking to lose weight.
Epidemiological evidence shows that regular consumption of oats as well as whole grain foods can reduce hunger. It can also increase feelings of satiety. It’s not a stretch of the imagination to say that you won’t be looking to have dinner when you eat oat loaf cake in the afternoon.
It is also packed in minerals such as manganese, selenium, phosphorus and zinc.
But what’s about blueberries? What can you get from this super food?
The sweet and succulent blueberry is packed in phytochemicals. It has been proven that phytochemicals has a powerful antioxidant action that protects the bodies against numerous diseases such as heart related ailments, diabetes, cancer and high blood pressure.
Blueberries also promote healthy digestion, and like oats can help in weight loss because it increases satiety and reduces appetite.
In choosing blueberries, I suggest you look for those that are firm. Avoid those that look soft. Ripe blueberries are deep purple blue and blue-black in color.
